Job Summary

• St. Dominic Catholic Hospital is seeking an experienced, highly competent, and dedicated Registered Nurse to serve as the Head of Department (HOD), General Ward.

• The successful candidate will provide strong clinical and administrative leadership within the General Ward, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, compassionate, and patient-centred nursing care while supervising staff and coordinating the day-to-day operations of the unit.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide effective clinical and administrative leadership for the General Ward.

• Supervise, coordinate, and evaluate the performance of nurses, nurse assistants, and other assigned staff.

• Prepare and monitor the departmental duty roster to ensure adequate staffing and proper coverage.

• Ensure that patients receive high-quality, safe, and compassionate nursing care.

• Monitor patients' conditions and ensure timely escalation of changes or emergencies to the appropriate medical personnel.

• Ensure proper administration of medications and treatments in accordance with prescriptions and hospital protocols.

• Ensure accurate, complete, and timely documentation of patient care and nursing activities.

• Conduct regular ward rounds and monitor compliance with nursing standards and hospital policies.

• Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures.

• Identify staff training needs and support continuous professional development within the department.

• Monitor the use, maintenance, and availability of ward equipment and supplies.

• Promote effective communication and teamwork among staff and other hospital departments.

• Address patient and staff concerns appropriately and escalate unresolved matters to Management.

• Prepare and submit departmental reports as required.

• Participate in hospital meetings, trainings, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.

• Enforce professionalism, discipline, ethical practice, and confidentiality within the department.

• Serve as a link between the General Ward staff, Nursing Supervisor, Human Resources Department, and Management.

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) qualification.

• Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc.).

• Valid and current Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) practising licence.

Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years post-qualification nursing experience/ NYSC experience.

• Previous experience in a General Ward, Medical/Surgical Ward, or similar clinical setting.

• Previous supervisory or HOD experience is highly desirable.

Required Skills & Competencies:

• Strong leadership and staff management skills.

• Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making abilities.

• Strong knowledge of general nursing and patient care practices.

• Good understanding of public health and infection prevention principles.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

• Strong administrative, organizational, and documentation skills.

• Ability to manage conflicts and resolve workplace challenges professionally.

• Ability to work effectively under pressure.

• Strong commitment to teamwork, ethical practice, patient safety, and quality healthcare delivery.

• Good computer and report-writing skills.
