About the role



• To provide professional leadership and overall accountability for nursing services across the hospital, ensuring safe, effective, compassionate and patient-centred nursing care.

• The Chief Nursing Officer sets nursing standards, leads the nursing workforce, and ensures compliance with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.



Responsibilities



• Provide overall professional and administrative leadership of nursing services across all streams.

• Set, maintain and audit standards of nursing care, patient safety and nursing governance.

• Lead nursing workforce planning, staffing, rostering and skill-mix across units.

• Supervise, mentor, appraise and develop nursing leaders and staff, and coordinate CPD/MCPDP compliance.

• Ensure safe, effective and compassionate nursing care across out-patient, in-patient and specialised oncology/infusion services, recognising the distinct clinical demands of each.

• Ensure effective interface between nursing and medical, pharmacy, diagnostic, managed-care and support services.

• Contribute to service planning, resource management and quality-improvement initiatives.

• Ensure nursing practice is delivered by appropriately registered and licensed nurses, in line with NMCN requirements and internal policies.

• Represent nursing in hospital governance, committees and management forums.



Requirements

Education:



• Registered Nurse RN qualification from an accredited School/College of Nursing, or a Bachelor of Nursing Science BNSc/BSc Nursing from a recognised university.

• Completion of any required orientation/internship and NYSC for degree holders, or a valid exemption where applicable.



Experience:



• Minimum of 15 years of post-registration NMCN nursing experience, including at least 5 years in senior nursing leadership.

• Substantial post-registration nursing experience, including experience at a senior or nurse-leadership level.

• Demonstrable experience leading and coordinating nursing services across units.

• Experience in nursing governance, quality assurance, staffing, and the supervision and appraisal of nursing staff.



Required skills:



• Strong knowledge of nursing practice and nursing leadership across care settings.

• Ability to lead and coordinate a large nursing workforce.

• Sound understanding of nursing governance, patient safety, audit and quality assurance.

• Ability to plan nursing staffing and skill-mix.

• Effective communication, teaching and supervisory skills.

• Sound clinical record-keeping and competent use of clinical systems.
